Wishing Barbara Barrie a happy 92nd birthday! She only stayed at the 12th a short time but Elizabeth Miller sure made an impact, even years later when, like Kogan, she became often spoken of but never seen.
Liz was perfect for Barney. Their chemistry was electric. She combined a sharp wit with a no-nonsense attitude and added plenty of compassion and kindness, always gave as good as she got and had the respect of all the men of the 12th.
Throughout the years we listened in on Barney and Liz’s marriage troubles, as she struggled with her valid fears for his safety, and Barney with his equally valid frustration over her not being able to understand that being a cop is who he IS, not just what he does. It’s also where we saw Barney’s softest side as he showed just how much he loves her, and in one rather spicy moment, thoroughly enjoys discussing “dessert” on the phone with her, until Dietrich and Levitt rudely interrupt.
The writers brilliantly wove the Millers’ separation into many storylines and we could feel their heartache. Barbara returned as Liz one last time in Toys, the Season 5 Christmas episode, where we saw them finally get back together and decide to get the cabin after all! Then they shared a kiss that warmed everyone’s hearts.
If Barney was the conscience of the 12th, Liz was its sensibilities, a reminder of how hard being a law enforcement officer could be on the ones that loved them most. Liz was not afraid to show this along with her love for Barney, and also laid bare her vulnerability as well as show us her amazing strength. She was an indelible part of the magic that made Barney Miller so iconic.
Here’s to you Barbara!
